This wasn't supposed to be how her first day of the new school was supposed to go. She was supposed to make friends on the train, enjoy the sight of the beautiful school and be generally excited to see what house she was going to be placed in. Here's how September first really went for her. She boarded the train after teary goodbyes to her parents, and found a compartment with her twin brother. They were quickly joined by a couple other first years. Not too long into the train ride and a couple of older students in robes with green accents came into the compartment and told fake tales of horror about the boat ride and how painful the sorting was. They may of not gotten to the other first years like they got to Delilah. She was terrified, not because she believed them (okay, maybe she did a bit) but mainly because she realized how just very little she actually knew about this school. What were they getting into?
She sat very still and rigid in the self propelled wooden boat as it drifted across the lake. The other first years were gazing at the beautiful stars or splashing their hands in the dark waters. There was no way she was sticking any of her appendages near the waters though. She snapped at her brother and bossily told him to get his hands out of the lake. He just laughed at her a told her to lighten up. By the time she had gotten out of the boat she was feeling more relaxed. A mousey looking girl had fallen in the lake and she still had all her limbs. The older students were loosing their credibility. Besides, how bad could the sorting be? Apparently all the other students at Hogwarts had gotten through it just fine. If they could, then Delilah certainly could too.
When all the first years were headed into the great hall like sheep, she was a bit unnerved at just how many students were watching their every moves. An old hat was brought out and much to her amazement it sung a song. A singing hat, what's next? she wondered. Then names were being called, and one by one students were being called forward, being sorted into different houses by said hat. She was bewildered, but was becoming more and more eager to see where it would put her. She watched the Creevey girl that had fell into the lake slosh up the few stairs to sit on the stool. Then a boy, and finally her name was being called, and her brother was nudging her forward. Alphabetical order meant she was being called before him. She didn't care at the hundreds of pairs of eyes watching her now. Eagerly she bounded forward and sat on the stool with a silly grin on her face. She just about jumped when the hat starting talking to her in her head and talking about what kind of a girl she seemed to be. So now it was a mind-conversing, mind-reading hat too?
