Phoebe remembered her Sorting like it was yesterday. She had been taller than all the other kids, as they lined up in the ante chamber next to the Great Hall. This had made her very self-conscious - though she would get used to this as the years went on - and added to her nerves. Following the rest of the new students out into the Great Hall had been very daunting. The enchanted ceiling being the first thing to draw her eye, black rain clouds rumbling across it, as if it were about to rain inside the castle any second. She had nearly bumped into the staff table, so busy watching the ceiling was she.
Her family name beginning with 'R' meant that she had quite a long wait, and though for others, that made them even more anxious and nervous, Phoebe found herself calming down by the minute as she watched the procedure over and over. It really wasn't that bad, she realized, thinking to herself how easy it would be to just wear a hat for a minute or so and then go and sit at a new table with potential new friends.
"PHOEBE RAYNE!"
The Headmistress' voice rang through her ears like the loudest sound in the history of the universe. Eyes widening, as they usually did when she was startled, Phoebe felt her feet carry her forwards, towards the stool a few feet away. It seemed very short to her, even though a lot of the other students' feet hadn't touched the floor. Perching on the end of it, she pulled the hat up over her blonde curls, the ringlets being the only thing to stop it from falling down over her face, and waited.
