ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE
MYSELF
MYSELF
"Aloof. Cold-fish. Distant. These are all words people have used to describe you in the past, Mr. Fontaine. Anything you'd like to say about that."
'Maybe I am all of those things. Or maybe you just don't know me well enough. Maybe the people that have said those things have never bothered to spend enough time with me. Neglect creates such impressions. People think they know something of a person, purely because they are too lazy to prove themselves wrong. I may seem aloof, and distant and whatever you said about fish, but that is only on the surface. Not that you would ever bother to find that out for yourself.'
"Well, you seem quite official in the way that you present yourself to us. Not very warm and at ease..."
'I am only warm and at ease in the company of my good friends and family. Plus, if you start this interview off in an insulting, abrasive manner, I am likely to respond in a very detached, manner, in turn, am I not? Have you ever heard of manners? I have, and I retain them for people who deserve them. You're proving to me straight away that you have no such respect for me, and I don't care who people think they are, I will not let anyone talk to me in a disrespectful manner.'
"Whoa, well we do apologize, but you're not making a very good first impression, Evan."
'Well, you're not allowing me to, are you. You make me put you in your place right off the bat, I'm not going to look like a saint, am I? Maybe they should send someone else out to do interviews in future.'
"Well, maybe we should just crack on with the questions and get this over with quickly, then..."
'Go right ahead. I'm not stopping you.'
"Fine. You're half French, half English, is that correct?"
'In a round about way. My mother was born and raised in England, and then moved to France when she was in her early twenties. My father is from Cannes. That is where I was born, though I was raised between there and England, equally, so I can't claim that I am one or the other. Though when it came to my education, my father felt that Beaubatons would be a better choice for me. But my sense of adventure took over when the transfer program kicked in so I decided on my own that I wanted to change over for my last few years. I think it was a good decision. I like change. It's very refreshing. Like a blast of fresh air through your brain.'
"What a lovely way to put it... So have you always been adventurous, then?"
'I don't know that you would call it adventurous, exactly. I just like to break the mold. I don't like following tradition and convention. Rules are necessary sometimes, but they are also there to be broken and challenged and altered for the better. I believe that everything, including the magical world, should move forward with the times. Like, Muggle technology, for example. I find it fascinating. My parents are both Pureblood, so I have to sneak it all around them, but locked away in my room at home, I have this thing called a laptop. It is a computer device powered by electricity, and it lets you access information from all over the world on this thing called the internet. It's amazing. I don't understand why the wizarding world shuns such brilliant inventions.'
"Well, the wizarding world is built on tradition. So maybe you really are just a fish out of water."
'Maybe I am. I appreciate magic enough, of course. I wouldn't be who I am without it, but integrating useful instruments into things surely couldn't hurt anything. Gah, I don't know. I know they will never learn or listen, but I guess it is ok for me to have my own personal items from the Muggle world, that make me happy.'
"So, you're a rule-breaker, then?"
'No. I have never had a detention in my whole life. I just like things that are different. I rebel in ways that don't get me in trouble. For example, I sometimes takes notes in class with Muggle pens or pencils, instead of my quill. Or I encourage my friends to visit Muggle towns with me to have some fun. I do admit that I get a kick out of breaking convention, but not necessarily the rules. Not the important ones, anyway.'
"And you're very intelligent, despite this, are you not?"
'Yes. I am top of my year in school. It has always come naturally to me, I am not embarrassed to admit. I just find it easy to take in a lot of new information, no matter how complicated or tricky it is. Even as a young child, I was always an early achiever. I could walk when I was around eight months old. I could read and write my own name before the age of one year old. I could hold a full conversation with adults by the time I was one and a half. It was a natural progression for me to be a fast learner once I hit my school years. I like to invent things, or come up with new ways of going about everyday activities. Especially in lessons, I often ignore instructions in books and experiment with my own ideas on how I could improve upon spells of potions. It does go wrong on occasion, yes, but the times when I am successful are definitely worth it.'
"You sound like a very quirky character. What do your friends think of this?"
'Well, obviously my real friends like me for who I am. Those are the people that spend enough time with me to get to know the deeper sides of me. The more meaningful things that the general public will never see. Like the fact that I am secretly very romantic with girls. Or that I took private ballet lessons as a child and am quite an accomplished dancer. Or that I laugh more than all of my friends put together. You know, there are sides to people that the rest of the world never witness. There's not a soul in the world who can say they have every part of them on show for all to see. My friends appreciate me for who I am. Whether it's those deeper levels, or the surface, quirky, genius ones. I often help them with their homework or tutor them in my free time so that they pass their exams. I may appear to be snooty with people I don't know very well, but I am a good person to those who are good to me.'
"So, this romance thing that you mentioned... Does this mean you have a girlfriend?"
'No, I don't. I'm single at the moment. But I have had girlfriends in the past. I like to keep those kinds of things very private. Sure, I will hold hands with a girl in public, and give her a kiss on the cheek, but nothing more. The rest of the world doesn't need to see anything more than that. It's personal, you know. A relationship should be kept between two people. But I am quite fussy when it comes to girls. They have to have an air of class about them, and be well-mannered and refined and all of those dignified sorts of things. But then, behind closed doors, out of the public eye, it's nice for a girl to be able to let her hair down and have fun. Someone who doesn't care about looking silly in front of me. Someone who will encourage and support me and be right at my side on my wacky ventures. Maybe I just like people with a split personality. Or maybe I'm just looking for someone who presents themselves properly to the outside eye, even if it is only an act. I like to have fun and be silly, despite what people may think of me.'
"Well, despite your public persona, we're sure you'll have no trouble finding her, since you're not bad looking, really."
'I look like my father. With my mother's blue eyes and smile. My dad, Henri has the same long, dark hair as me, and the dimples in his cheeks. People have always commented on how like him I am. I suppose he is a good looking man.'
"Well, we'll bring this interview to a close on this rare positive point."
'Yeah. Good idea.'
